Kothagudem: The term of the current panchayats in Kothagudem district ended on Tuesday and with that new ones also came into being which increased the total number of the village councils to 479.

Expressing his sentiment on the completion of the term of panchayats, the District Sarpanches Association president D. Chadhu Naik said, “The five years had been very satisfactory. As a sarpach I developed major grama panchayat Sarapaka with more funds.”

However, he criticised the government’s decision of appointing the special officers to the grama panchyatas. He said, it is not a good decision. He also appealed to the government to continue the sarpaches before the panchayat elections. The sarpanches were elected by the people, he added.

B Swetha , the sarpanch of another major grama panchyat, Bhadrachalam, also expressed her satisfaction over her five- year term as sarpanch. She said, “the last five years were very good for me. For the first time I entered the political arena and got most experience as a sarpanch.”

“The temple town Bhadrachalam was developed with more funds during my tenure. I will participate in the next election,” she said. Siromani, the outgoing sarpanch of Mandalapally, which got the Swachh Bharath Award, also expressed happiness over her five years as a sarpanch.

“During the five years I worked with people. The Swachh Bharath Award was a memorable moment in my life. With the cooperation of people we were able to keep Mandanpally panchyat clean,” she added.

The district has 205 panchayats and the government had allocated 274 new panchayats recently and now Kothagudem has 479 panchayats spread across 23 mandals.

As part of the promise, the TRS government made some villages panchayats. And tandas also turned into new panchyats. This way the government allocated 274 new panchyats in the Bhadradri-Kothagudem district.

New panchayat offices are being set up for running the village administration across the district. According to sources, the government has appointed 479 special officers in the district for smooth administration in villages. The 479 special officers include 248 Gazetted Officers and 231 non-gazette officers.
