Hyderabad: Buoyed by the Election Commission of India’s ban on distribution of Bathukamma sarees by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, the Congress is now expecting the EC to put brakes on the distribution of cheques under Rythu Bandhu, the pet scheme of TRS.

The Congress has been accusing the TRS of abuse of power and misuse of official machinery for electoral gains. Leaders of the party said that the ruling TRS has been using the officials to serve its interests and using the official programmes for their advantage.

“The party is already under pressure in the form of dissolution of Assembly in September and possibility of early elections to it in November. Though, the TRS leaders have been stating that they are ready to face the elections at any time, they are apprehensive of early elections privately,” said the Congress leaders.

However, the official programmes in the districts by the TRS leaders is giving jitters to Congress. The Congress leaders felt that launching of various programmes would give an upper hand to the ruling party candidates. PCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy has alleged that caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao did some 'match fixing' with EC to conduct early polls in the State.

He pointed that the Chief Minister had claimed that he had already spoken to Chief Election Commissioner regarding early elections. Uttam said when there was suspense among all political parties with regard to dissolution of Assembly, Chandrashekar Rao's claim on his interaction with EC raises strong suspicion of some 'match fixing'. The decisions of the EC after the dissolution of the Assembly on taking up revision of voter lists have raised doubts in Congress that the ruling party has been abusing its power.

A delegation of Congress leaders filed a complaint with the Chief Secretary SK Joshi and CEO Rajat Kumar about the large-scale violation of model code by the ruling party. The government was misusing the administrative machinery and premises of the offices for TRS publicity, they alleged.

They accused that the pictures of the Chief Minister and Ministers have been published on the advertisements of the government which is a violation of the model code. They said that the MLAs of ruling party were conducting foundation stone laying programmes in the districts.

They have also complained about the distribution of sarees to women ahead of Bathukamma festival to the CEO. The Congress leaders complained that the distribution of cheques under Rythu Bandhu would give advantage to the ruling party.

In this regard, the Chief Electoral Officer has referred the Congress pleas to the Election Commission of India, following which it has imposed ban on distribution of Bathukamma sarees. The Congress leaders are of the view that the EC would also prevent the government from distribution of cheques under RB scheme. They said that this would dent the morale of the ruling party leaders.
