Hyderabad: Even as the ‘#MeToo’ movement is engulfing the nation and the fairer sex is going all out against men, in the city, every week 500 estranged husbands are approaching family courts. According to the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), men too are facing problems from their wives. SIFF members say that women are using the law which is loaded in their favour to harass husbands. The members said that according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2015 statistics, 1,35,000 people committed suicides, of them 36,000 people due to family reasons, of which 24,000 are men.
Speaking to The Hans India, Sri Ram Reddy, a victim, said he had separated from his wife in 2006, but she is not ready to give her consent to mutual divorce. He said he has been paying alimony of Rs 15,000 to his wife. Sri Ram said he has been roaming around courts in different cities, which are far from his place. Reddy said his in-law’s family members are not allowing him to talk with his son even after the court allowed. He said his wife has filed Section 498 against him. He said he been facing physical and mental pressure. He has lost his job as he could not concentrate on it. A case is also registered against his sister due to which she remains unmarried. He demanded that the government treat both the genders equally.
RP Shah, victim and coordinator of the organisation, said that his wife has filed Section 498 and domestic violence case against him in Hyderabad and Odisha. He said that he was made to run around the courts twice every month. He was not allowed even to meet his children. Shah said he is paying alimony of Rs 5,000 every month. Shah is a self-employed by profession. A victim, a software employee and green card holder, said on condition of anonymity that his wife is demanding Rs 1.5 lakh alimony, Rs 50 lakh compensation and a flat to give consent to mutual divorce. He said his wife filed Section 498 and domestic violence case against him for which his family is making rounds to the court. “If there was gender neutrality, I wouldn’t have faced this situation,” he said and demanded gender neutrality in such cases.
