Mahbubnagar: With new academic year is about to begin within a few days, district school education department authorities decided to seek funds least Rs 54.39 crore from the government for renovation, up-gradation and development of basic infrastructure facilities in all government schools across the district.

In this regard, District Collector S Venkat Rao held a meeting with District School Education officials and discussed various issues and problems being faced by the department.

District Education Officer (DEO) Usha Rani said that due to coronavirus outbreak, several works like providing basic infrastructure etc were pending. As there is very little time and the government is yet to release proper guidelines to the schools to begin their operations during coronavirus healthcare emergency, the department decided to seek Rs 54.39 crore funds against last year's proposal for Rs 120 crores, she added.

It is learnt the main reason for the drastic reduction in funds sought by the district education department is due to lack of time to take up the renovation works, as the academic year is about to begin in a few days ahead.

Moreover, with the corona pandemic spreading widely, the authorities got blocked in lock down for the past two months and could not prepare detailed renovation work proposals. The major issues that are bothering government schools are lack of proper classrooms, pending flooring works in many schools, compound walls. toilets to be built and renovated.

In addition to this, in many schools construction of new toilets and installation of water facilities is yet to be taken up for which the education department requires urgent funds and works related to these problems needed to be taken up immediately as there is very limited time left to complete them before the academic year commences.
