Hyderabad: Telangana State Planning Board Vice-Chairman B Vinod Kumar on Saturday said that the Centre's announcement of stimulus package without providing for direct financial support to the States would just amount to publicity gimmick and was aimed at diverting attention from serious issues.

Reacting on the package and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman's decisions, the Planning Board Vice-Chairman said that as these announcements do not contain any direct financial support to States, they were just a ploy to divert attention from serious issues. He said that structural reforms in any sector were always required and it was an ongoing process. These reforms would also take next few years for implementation at ground level and there is no scope for immediate results and benefits.

The moot point is how these reforms in atomic energy, mineral sector, space sector and defence sector are related to relief measures at both individual and institutional levels. Similarly, how privatisation of Discoms in Union Territories would be relevant to the current health crisis, he asked.

The TRS leader said that one was forced to wonder that the Government of India was mistaking reform measures as relief measures. "If it is so, then Government of India announcements on relief measures are misleading and mischievous.

It is not an exaggeration to state that Government of India is pulling a joke on the poor and distressed population of the country through these daily announcements," said Vinod.

"I condemn the callous attitude of Prime Minister and Finance Minister for giving false hopes to the distressed people of India through these phony announcements every day, without giving any substantial direct benefits and relief to them," said Vinod.
