Dewatering the lake taken up in Phase 1 and desilting completed

Hyderabad: As part of the lake rejuvenation programme under Mission Kakatiya, the Malka Cheruvu is getting a facelift. The recent visit of Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar has given a fillip to the works. The Malka Cheruvu Lake Rejuvenation Project at Upperpally is aimed to overcome the perennial issue of water clogging from Upperpally to Hyderguda under PVNR Expressway.

"The Rs 4.7 Cr project is being carried out in a phased manner under mission Kakatiya phase four programme. This project was grounded in 2019 and is mandated to be completed by July end. The lake area consists of a total of 15.5 acres and is being fully protected from all sorts of encroachments," informed Ch Nagaraju, Assistant Executive Engineer GHMC Irrigation Wing.

The GHMC, he said, has envisaged the project as 'Restoration and Comprehensive Development of Malka Cheruvu' along with other 18 lakes in and around the city. "The primary aim is to rejuvenate the urban lakes by diverting the sewerage water from upstream areas into water bodies through diversion channels and box drains thereby helping to retain the rainwater into ground. For this, a box drain is also planned from Pillar No. 191 under PVNR Expressway to Malka Cheruvu lake at Uperpalli," said the official.

Elaborating that the project would take shape into four phases, he said, the works of dewatering the lake was taken up in phase 1 and desilting works have been done in the dried lake during 2nd Phase. Similarly, strengthening the main bund and new surplus weir arrangements would be done in 3rd Phase along with inlets and outlets improvements. The 4th and final stage would see formation and strengthening of peripheral ring bund with stone pitching," he explained.

"Meanwhile, the fencing work at peripheral area of the lake boundary is in progress. After completion of civil works, plantation works will be taken up by the GHMC. The project would likely be completed by the end of July this year if all things go well as per the plan," added the official.

However, there is a legal hurdle in the way of executing the box drain being taken up by the Engineering wing. The works are put on hold due to objection raised by some of the residents and one aggrieved party even approached the court and secured stay order.
