Rajendranagar: While 'Baldiya Khaya Piyaa Chaldiya' is a synonym used for GHMC officials, the contractors of the civic body carry more dangerous connotation as 'Sadak Khudo Aur Khula Chordo' (Dig the road and let it remain open), putting the lives of citizens ino jeopardy.

Several areas in the city as well as in the outskirts are witnessing road works these days. These works, especially in Rajendranagar, are causing great inconvenience to people.

After digging up the ground, the contractors temporarily fill it or leave it open often causing serious incidents as people are caught unawares about the ongoing works.

"People while rushing to offices or are on way to drop their children to schools are caught unawares by the open trenches as they are completely uninformed about the digging up of roads in their close proximities. Contractors are not even placing caution boards at the excavation site to alert citizens," rued Syed Shoukat Ali a resident of Shastripuram Colony, under Rajendranagar. They are blocking the entire roads for a petty nature of works. "Just for laying a pipeline of two feet diameter at the side of the road at Shastripuram, the contractor has dug up half of the 40-ft road and spread the mud and soil on the other half of the passage.

More so, to connect the same pipe line to a sub-lane he further excavated the road taking a 90 degree turn blocking the road completely for the residents," said Mir Mushtaq Ali, another resident of the same colony. As per the contractual agreement it is mandatory for all the contractors to erect caution boards at the site as security paraphernalia so as to help people take cognisance of the ongoing works in their area or close proximities.
