Hyderabad: As election of new president for the All India Congress Committee taking new turns with each passing day, the Telangana Congress leaders are worried, and they are on tenterhooks about the leadership issue.

Though the party leaders expected that the Congress Working Committee would meet during this week to elect the new president, their hopes had evaporated. Party leaders said that the CWC may meet next week.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee treasurer Gudur Narayana Reddy said Rahul Gandhi may consider the demand to appoint a committee to elect AICC president. He said even Rahul may leave the selection of the new president to the Working Committee without referring it to the committee. "It all depends on the decision of Rahul Gandhi," he said.

Meanwhile, AICC member G Niranjan addressed a letter to Congress senior leader and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi to take initiative to break the stalemate. In the letter, he said the Congress workers have full faith in the leadership of her as she was responsible for bringing back the glory to the party by taking over the reins in 1998.

He said Sonia Gandhi had taken the responsibility when everyone was in doubt about the future of the party. Once again similar situation has arisen with the decision of Rahul Gandhi to resign to the post of Congress presidentship.

Niranjan said the uncertainty is affecting the morale of the cadre and the opponents are taking advantage and turning it in their favour. It is evident that no Congress Working Committee member is in a mood to play their role effectively to pull the party out from the present chaos.

He said that the uncertainty over the leadership at the top level affected the results in the recent ZPTC and MPTC elections in Telangana State and the workers are afraid that it may affect Congress's prospects in ensuing Municipal and Corporation elections also.

He requested Sonia Gandhi to take initiative in convening the meeting of Congress Working Committee to choose a suitable leader to head the party at this crucial juncture in the larger interests of the party and to save the democracy in the country.
