Says the survey is an indicator of high-quality research in the nature and physical sciences

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) is all set to secure top rank in the Nature Index Survey-2019 (NIS-2019). It is also recognised as the only university among the top 10 in India.

A UoH statement said the Nature Index is an indicator of high-quality research in the natural and physical sciences (includes chemistry, life sciences, earth and environmental sciences).

The competition is from established scientific research institutes and the IITs which constitutes an illustrious list of 10 higher educational institutions (HEIs).

It said that all research output from UoH published between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018 were tracked by the Nature Index. The UoH is at number 10 in the list.

The UoH Vice-Chancellor Prof Appa Rao Podile said "I congratulate our faculty colleagues whose outstanding research in science schools has earned this distinction by the UoH to be the only University in Top 10 ranks.

This is by no means a simple achievement in the current scenario where we compete in the quality and quantity of research output", he added.

The Nature Index is a database of author affiliation information collated from research articles published in an independently selected group of over 65 high-quality science journals.

The database is compiled by Nature Publishing Group (NPG). The Nature Index provided a close to real time proxy for high-quality research output at the institutional, national and regional level.

The Nature Index provided a perspective on high-quality research on the basis of published articles. It is intended to be one of a few number of metrics to assess research excellence and institutional performance.

The other HEIs in the order of rankings included the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), University of Hyderabad (UoH).

In the subject of Chemistry, UoH is at the 8th position in the country, it said.
