Vijayawada: As many as ten lakh people commit suicide every year, said noted psychiatrist RK Ayodhya. Speaking at a seminar organised at Press Club here on Tuesday to mark 'World Suicide Prevention Day', Dr Ayodhya said that most of the suicide cases among people are due to social, family, financial and health problems which is alarming.

To bring down the suicides, responsibility lies on the family members, society, psychiatrists and social workers. He said that it was their responsibility to counsel them and provide the emotional support.

He said that the number of suicides was increasing year after year which was a great concern and it is thrice in males when compared to females. The emotionally distressed persons should be told that they would not be able to achieve anything by committing suicide, which was a cowardly act.

Dr Ayodhya said that people can be treated who suffer from the above mentioned problems by exploring the cause behind urge to commit suicide. Dr K Manasa of Sri Manasa Psychiatrist Nursing Home was present on the occasion.
