Amid country-wide lockdown imposed following the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, millions of migrant workers and labourers from many parts of the country have returned to their homes, leaving the construction works at a halt. Meanwhile, Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL), which has undertaken the Polavaram project the largest irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh has also hit with lockdown where most of the migrant workers and labourers left the site.

According to the Andhra Pradesh irrigation department, 1200 workers have left the Polavaram project area last month, which led the Megha Company to stall the works. As per the sources, Megha Company, which aims to complete the Polavaram project in time, has ferried nearly a thousand workers in special trains and likely to transport another 1800 people in the next week. The company has also increased wages and other facilities for the workers.

On the other hand, the construction industry in Hyderabad city is also struggling with the unavailability of workers. Thousands of workers are being shifted to the city by increasing wages. The Prestige Company has reportedly brought the ten carpenters from Patna to Hyderabad in a plane. The shortage of skilled labour and workers have forced the companies to woo the workers with sops.
