Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president S Sailajanath has taken strong exception to the judgment delivered by the Supreme Court at reservations in promotions was not a fundamental right. Addressing the media at Andhra Ratna Bhavan here on Monday, Sailajanath said the BJP-ruled Uttarakhand government had denied reservations in promotions, which was struck down by the Uttarakhand High Court. However, the Supreme Court reversed the decision of the High Court, stating that the reservations in promotions was not a fundamental right. "The Congress government only will provide constitutional protection to the SC, ST and Minorities," he said. He took Prime Minister Narendra Modi to task for not responding on the issue so far. "This is nothing but a move by the BJP government to withdraw reservations through backdoor as the RSS is against the reservations since the beginning."

He recalled that the Congress provided reservations to the economically backward classes too during its regime. He demanded that the Prime Minister clarify his sand on the issue.

The APCC chief warned that the Congress would launch protest demonstrations on February 15 and 16 if the Prime Minister failed to clarify. AICC secretary Sirivella Prasad, APCC vice-president M J Ratna Kumar, general secretary Santibhushan, city Congress president Gurunatham, youth Congress city president Satish and others were present.
