Vizianagaram: Vizianagaram district is recovering from the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic. The district administration has given boost to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

Within a few days, the number of workers engaged in the MGNRES has gone up. Now, the district stood first in entire State in terms of providing work to the job cardholders.

The district has 4.46 lakhs job cardholders till March.

Though the district has industries and some business establishments, the agriculture sector and the MGNRES have been provide employment to the poor. The lockdown in the wake of outbreak of coronavirus, employment opportunities has shrunk in the district. A large number of workers are struggling to make ends meet. The district administration, while encouraging the MGNREGS, has ensured that the workers wear masks and maintain social distance norms.

Though the workers initially hesitated to come forward, gradually they started trickling in and now the district stood first in providing a good number of worddays. A total of 11, 250 job cards were scationed and 6.15 lakh workers participated in works, which is the highest number in the entire State.
