The 2nd State Varietal Release Committee (SVRC)-2019 has approved for the release proposal of eight new varieties of crops developed by Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) on Thursday.

Rajendernagar: The 2nd State Varietal Release Committee (SVRC)-2019 has approved for the release proposal of eight new varieties of crops developed by Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) on Thursday.

The committee met under the chairmanship of the APC & Principal Secretary to The Department of Agriculture and Cooperation C Parthasarathi, and approved the release proposals. The committee approved three rice varieties and one each in sorghum, red gram, groundnut, sesame and cotton.

Director of Research at PJTSAU Dr R Jagadeeshwar, Director at SRTC Dr Pradeep, principal scientists of various crops, officers from the Department of Agriculture, National Seed Corporation, Director at TS Seed Development Corporation and several scientists attended the committee meeting.

Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University is striving hard to develop high yielding varieties in different crops for the benefit of Telangana farmers through intensive research and extension. The research is a continuous activity to deal with rectification of defects in existing varieties, besides increasing the yield potential or sustainable agriculture.

After the formation of Telangana state, the university has released 13 high yielding varieties in different crops through 1st SVRC in 2015. The varieties are Telanagana Sona, KNM 118, Bathukamma in Rice, Karimnagar Makka-1 in Maize and PRG-176 in Red gram and WGG 42 in Green gram etc. They have become very popular in Telangana and adjoining states.

Similarly, after four years of previous release, the University has again come up with eight high yielding cultures, which were developed and extensively tested in different trials and mini kits. Now, these cultures are being proposed for release through 2nd SVRC in Telangana.
