Hyderabad: Unlike in the past, this time GHMC elections are witnessing tough competition from the independent contestants to the candidates from main political parties.

Some independents are in the fray as they have been denied tickets despite a good support base, while others want to test the waters. They claim to desire nothing but only an intention to serve society.

Stressing that his sole aim is to serve the needy and uplift the downtrodden, an independent contestant from Yousufguda, Kaleed Basha, says, "I promise to bring CCTV surveillance and streetlights in every corner of the area, clear water stagnation, repair damaged roads and ensure timely removal of garbage. Also, special care will be taken for well-being of senior citizens."

In Boudha Nagar, taking forward the message of women empowerment and cause of domestic workers, A Roseleena (Glory), the candidate from Division 146, is garnering attention. "I am also trying to concentrate on the health sector and basic facilities for every household. In any situation, I will be there to provide all the services that the people need," she said.

A rebel candidate of BJP, Anitha Yadhav is in the fray as independent candidate from Gunfoundary and she is seeking votes on development plank, as this commercial area does not have amenities like parking spaces. "Beside parking issue, in various residential areas in the division there is no proper drainage system. If I get elected as a corporator then I would lay roads, control traffic chaos, provide proper sewerage connection and will also work in hand in hand with the people for women empowerment and social equality," said Anitha Yadhav.

Another independent candidate is from Asifnagar. Lubna Sarwath, an activist who contested as MLA, is in the fray to ensure social justice, "Power will always be with people and if elected, I shall serve them duty-bound. Hyderabadis deserve governance that is zero-corruption, zero-pollution, full-transparency, all-time responsive. I will be within reach of people after being elected," said Lubna.

Taking forward his battle on civic issues, the activist Abdul Rehman also threw his hat into the ring this time. "Already I am ensuring that works take place for years, which a corporator must be doing. Being a responsible citizen, I ensured various works are taken up. As our residents recognised my efforts for development, they asked me to contest in the elections and thus I have stepped forward to contest as independent corporator," said Abdul Rehman, who is contesting from Rein Bazaar.
