Cyber crime: Bangalore engineer loses Rs 1 lakh over driving licence renewal online

In an incident of cybercrime, a mechanical engineer working in Bangalore was duped of nearly Rs 1 lakh when he tried to renewal his driving licence online on November 26th.
The engineer (name not disclosed) searched for the KR Puram Regional Transport Office (RTO), found a helpline number +91-8144910621 on a website and called on it. The call answered by a person who claimed to be an employee of the RTO and asked to follow the instructions.
Firstly the person on the call, said that the One Time Password (OTP) would be sent through SMS, which has to be shared with him for the next process.
Beliving him without giving a thought, the engineer provided the OTP and clicked the link in the message, which allowed the man to withdraw the amount from his bank account through Google Pay.
On the next day (November 27), the engineer got several messages on his mobile that Rs 89,993 was transferred to four different unknown accounts from his bank account.
Over this, he lodged a complaint with Whitefield police station. On receiving the complaint, the police registered a case and transferred to the Cyber Crime department. The officials are trying to track the accused based on the IP address.
