DGCA to probe SpiceJet mishap
A SpiceJet plane caught up in a storm mid-air while attempting to land at Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, in Durgapur, Sunday evening
Aircraft grounded, crew taken off roster after turbulence leaves many hurt
New Delhi: The civil aviation authority (DGCA) has ordered an investigation into the SpiceJet Mumbai-Durgapur flight incident, in which 11 passengers sustained severe injuries after the plane got caught in turbulence during its descent on Sunday.
The flight SG-945, eventually managed to land safely at its destination, Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in West Bengal's Durgapur.In all, 40 passengers suffered injuries in the incident, out of whom 11 sustained serious injuries.
The rest were discharged after receiving treatment for minor injuries. Most of them suffered head injuries. The hospital authorities stated that the condition of 10 passengers was critical, but they were out of danger.
The aircraft encountered severe turbulence during its descent, which resulted in injuries. Expressing regret over the incident, SpiceJet said: "Immediate medical assistance was provided upon arrival in Durgapur.
It was not an emergency landing as the plane was scheduled to land at Andal airport. The problem occurred due to air turbulence by a Nor'wester locally called Kalbaishakhi."
