New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has defended Vikas Dubey's encounter in the Supreme Court, saying the Kanpur gangster was asked to surrender but he refused and fired at the police.
As per the affidavit in Vikas Dubey encounter case, the government claimed that the vehicle which was carrying the gangster to Kanpur from Ujjain, overturned due to rain and speed.
The UP government said, "Police personnel in the vehicle got seriously injured in the accident. Vikas Dubey took the pistol from one of the injured personnel. Though, he was asked to surrender but refused to do so and fired at the police. The only option available to the escort party, under the circumstances was to fire back in self defence".
Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter on the morning of July 10 when a police vehicle carrying him from Ujjain to Kanpur met with an accident and he tried to escape from the spot in Bhauti area, the police have claimed.
Vikas Dubey was killed a week after eight policemen, including DSP Devendra Mishra, were ambushed in Bikru village in Chaubeypur area of Kanpur when they were going to arrest the gangster and fell to bullets fired from rooftops shortly after midnight on July 3.
The UP government also said, in its affidavit, that the facts in the Hyderabad encounter case were different from the Vikas Dubey encounter case.
