Designing plays key role in industrial development

It is time for innovation and unless we excel in designing, our products will not get value addition, opined Shashank Mehta, project head, National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. He said designing plays a key role in industrial development.Speaking at a orientation programme on design clinic for medium and small entrepreneurs jointly organised by National Institute of Design and Andhra Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, Shashank said the MSME's share in exports stands at 40 per cent and can play a big role in providing employment.

He said that designing needs continuous updating as per the changing requirements. “Designers should have a continuous interaction with entrepreneurs to change the designs as per the market demand. The NID would extend cooperation to MSMEs to design their own products and machinery.”

Arvind Patwari, director, MSME, Hyderabad, said that designing should be updated frequently in view of global competition. “There is a competition among cost and quality. Priority should be given to get intellectual property rights. We should learn to manufacture products at a low cost.” Andhra Chamber of commerce and Industry federation president elect M Muralikrishna presided over the programme. The programme was organised in the context of setting up NID in Vijayawada from this academic year.
