Prices of mangoes this year have been hitting a new high. At present big sized juicy mangoes are selling for Rs500 per dozen. Similarly, small size of juicy mangos (chinnarasalu) is selling for Rs 350 to Rs 400 a dozen. Depending upon quality and size.

Vendors are selling the fruit at a fixed price. Even though the price is high, consumers do not hesitate to purchase the juicy mangoes, say the fruit vendors. They have also claimed for the sales to have picked up over the past few days. This is a phenomenon noticed over the beginning of the season.

A consumer, P Sunita, said, "At the beginning of the season, juicy mangoes are not sweet. That is why I purchased just half a dozen at Rs 200. If it tastes good, I will take some more. My family and I consume mangoes four days in a week during the season."

T Sivaiah a fruit vendor said "Generally at the beginning of the season, juicy mangoes price is high, after twenty days, supply of mangoes increases, then price of juicy mangos are expected to come down over the season.

Consumers do not pay heed to the price, if the quality of mango is good, they are ready to pay high prices to get it. We are purchasing mangoes from the wholesalers, adding some per cent and selling it to the consumers. Compared to last year, prices of juicy mangoes have increased by 15 to 20 per cent." Meanwhile, mango processing units are purchasing mangoes from the farmers extracting pulp and exporting the same.
