The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan has been launched and it is priced at Rs. 27.98 lakhs and Rs. 31.38 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the Comfortline and Highline variants respectively. The Tiguan is now the flagship offering from the VW stable and mark’s the German automaker’s re-entry in the premium segment.
For starters, the Tiguan was first shown at the 2016 Auto Expo and is built on the company’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform. Seeing the growing demand for SUVs in India, Volkswagen decided to bring in the Tiguan SUV to India. The SUV looks imposing from upfront. The sculpted bonnet, chrome on the grille with a big VW emblem and the large and wide bumpers with chrome, all give it a big bulky look.
The front gets LED headlamps with LED DRLs. The side is rather minimalist looking with black cladding running along the SUV. There is a strong shoulder line that runs from the front fender till the rear tail light. The top of the line Highline variant gets 18-inch alloy wheels. The rear too gets inverted L-shaped LED tail lights and electrically operated tailgate with adjustable opening angle.
The SUV measures 4486 mm in length, 1839 mm in width, 1646 mm in height and sits on a wheelbase of 2681 mm. The interiors get a neat and ergonomic layout. The steering wheel looks similar to some of its siblings. The quality of materials are top-notch. There is a touchscreen infotainment system with an 8-speaker setup and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Volkswagen has loaded the car with goodies and made it feature-rich. It comes with electric and heated front seats, memory function for the driver’s seat, 3-zone auto climate control, ambient cabin lighting, panoramic sunroof, push-button start, ECO drive mode, hill descent control, paddle shift, drive mode selector, 4-motion AWD system, cruise control, auto headlamps, electrically adjustable and foldable mirrors with memory function and a flat-bottom steering wheel.
On the safety front, the Tiguan gets self sealing tyres, electronic stability control, ABS, front and rear disc brakes, ISOFIX child seat mounts, front, side and curtain airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear park distance control, reverse parking camera, rain sensor, front fog lamp with cornering lights and rear fog lamps.
Under the hood is a 2.0-litre TDI diesel unit that produces 143 HP. The engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle-shifters and the claimed fuel efficiency is 17.06 km/l. It is available in the following colours – Tungsten Silver, Oryx White, Deep Black, Indium Grey and Atlantic Blue. The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan rivals the Hyundai Tucson and the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq while it will also compete with the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner.
