Bapatla: Utukur Lakshmikantamma was a rare combination of several talents from reciting poetry extempore in Sanskrit and Telugu to martial arts such as fencing, stick fighting and horse riding, said Forum for Better Bapatla secretary P C Sai Babu.

Addressing a meeting held to mark Lakshmikantamma's birth centenary celebrations at Bapatla Town Hall on Monday, he said that in the history of Telugu literature, her book ‘Andhra Kavayitrulu’ was the only comprehensive work on women poets till date. This was being used as a valuable reference tool by research scholars. He said that they used it as a source for writing about women poetes Molla and Mohanangi.

He said Lakshmikantamma was named ‘Sahiti Rudrama’ (Queen Rudramadevi in literature) by Devulapalli Ramanuja Rao, President of Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Akademi. She was the proud recipient of 10 more titles including ‘kalaprapoorna’ (awarded by Andhra University, 1976), ‘Andhra Saraswati’, ‘Dharma Prachaara Bharat’i and ‘Sangeeta Sahitya Kalanidhi’. Rich tributes were paid to the great poet by garlanding her statue.

Dr D Satyanarayana, Adarsha Society Secretary B Sambaiah, A Koteswara Rao, D Srinivasa Rao and students were among those participated.
