YSR Congress Party honorary president Y S Vijayamma faced the ire of Telangana protagonists on Thursday at some places in Khammam district during her visit to the villages devastated by heavy rain and flash floods.

The police prevented her from entering Nalgonda district from Khammam. As she defiantly sat on dharna on the road, she was taken into custody at Pynampalli village. After detaining her at the Nelakondapalli Police Station for some time, the police took her to Hyderabad under police escort.

Vijayamma entered Khammam from Krishna district on Thursday morning and visited areas affected by floods and heavy rain, including Madhira, Wyra, Khammam and Paleru constituencies. She interacted with farmers and enquired about their losses. Her tour went off without any hitch in the beginning, but when she went to Konijerla, VV Palem and Nelakondapalli, Telangana activists started hurling eggs and stones. The police intervened and dispersed the slogan-shouting agitators. When she reached Pynampalli village on her way to Nalgonda, the police stopped her and told her that she could not proceed to Nalgonda as they apprehended a law and order problem. Vijayamma told the police that she was determined to tour Nalgonda district to console farmers whose crops had been damaged. She sat on the road. Then the police took her into custody and took her to the Nelakondapalli Police Station. Later, she was taken to Hyderabad under police escort.

Speaking to the media at Nelakondapalli Police Station, Y S Vijayamma condemned her arrest and asked: “Is it wrong to interact with farmers? Are we living in a democracy?” She said that Telangana was not Pakistan or Bangladesh and accused the government of suppressing the rights of the people.

When the police were escorting Vijayamma to Hyderabad, the agitators hurled stones, eggs and chappals on the convoy at Khammam–Suryapet crossroads in the evening.
