Hyderabad: The 18th International Children's Film Festival got off to a glittering start on Thursday, coinciding with the Children's Day, at the sprawling open air auditorium at Lalita Kala Thoranam in the city. Declaring open the week-long film festival, organised by Children Film Society of India (CFSI), Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy promised that the long-pending construction of a permanent Children Film Society building would be taken up and the required infrastructure to run the office would be provided before the commencement of the next children’s film festival in the city. He said the government had already allocated land for the purpose. He also said that the government was trying to create permanent infrastructure for the conduct of film festivals in the coming years.

Referring to the funding issue of festivals, he observed that the state and the union governments should allocate sufficient funds for children’s film festivals.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari said the film festivals were not only showcasing creativity and entertainment but also proving a platform to express the right to plurality and expression. The festivals would also provide an opportunity to rededicate everyone to achieve “Vasudhaika Kutumbam.” He hoped that the 21st century would be a peaceful, prosperous and creative era for the next generation. Tewari thanked the Chief Minister for attending the festival by postponing his scheduled meeting with GoM on Telangana in New Delhi. He informed that over 900 films would be screened in the seven-day film festival being attended by delegates and film makers from 70 countries. State Information and Public Relations Minister D K Aruna said her government was committed to implementing the Right to Education (RTE) Act in its true spirit, and abolishing bonded and child labour in the State. Chief Secretary P K Mohanty said the government introduced ‘Bangaru Talli’ scheme to encourage the girl child education in the State.
