Intellectuals and eminent media persons on Saturday exhorted that the media should function in the right spirit of journalism, and urged them to ensure that the news of public interest was disseminated in a proper way.

The Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh held a seminar on ‘Role of Media in Serving Public Interest’ marking the ‘National Press Day’ on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering , Chief Information Commissioner of AP, Jannat Hussain said that the Article 19 (1) (a) of Indian Constitution, which speaks about the freedom of expression and public speech, was the mother of RTI Act.

While MLC and chairman of 10 TV K Nageshwar Rao expressed concern over the increasing disconnection between the mass media and the mass reality due to structural limitation of the news organisations, which were either driven by political or commercial interests. “The focus of the news organisation is more on presenting news that is of public interest. Rao was also of the view that news channels were losing accuracy in news report in their rush to break the news first. “There is a need to balance speed and accuracy while presenting news,” he said.

N Ramachander Rao, a member of Press Council of India (PCI) and Bar Council of India’s Hyderabad chapter, felt that the PCI should be given more powers to control the media. “The media trial by news channels and dailies is influencing real trial in the courts. This practice may damage the actual trial,” he said.

Govindarajulu Chakradhar, a senior journalist, called for greater news sensitivity among the journalists. He said that highlighting the news that was not very much in the interest of public should be avoided, while those in public interest should be followed up well. Subhash Gound, former director of I&PR, and Tirumalagiri Surender, chairman of the Press Academy of AP, also spoke.
