Hyderabad: On the occasion of World AIDS Day-2013, Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) on Sunday organised a rally from Nizam College grounds to Telugu Lalitha Kala Nilayam in Hyderabad. Around 5000 persons including NHRM Mission Director Buddhaprakash M Jyothi participated in the rally that was flagged off by renowned film actor Dr Rajendra Prasad at 9 am. Later, at a meeting at Telugu Lalitha Kala Nilayam, Dr B Kishore, project director-APSACS, said that around 34 million people were infected with HIV in the world and 22 lakh people were infected in the country and 5 lakh people were living with HIV (PLHIV) in the State. He said that with the support of government, APSACS is working for prevention of HIV, treatment, care and support of infected persons and their families. He said that 100 per cent enrollment of HIV positive pregnant women for revised PPTCT regimen was a big challenge. LV Subrahmanyam, principal secretary to Health, Medical & Family Welfare, said that from ancient times Indians were following 4 principles of Dharma, Purushartha, kama, and mokshalu. He opined that because of the deviations in the dharma suthras, human beings were falling prey to infections like HIV/AIDS.

Ajay Sawhney, principal secretary, Health, Medical & Family Welfare, said that the incidence of HIV was on the decline in the State. He informed that every chest symptomatic cases were being tested for HIV, as early detection of HIV was crucial for early initiation ART. He lauded the efforts of staff in bringing down the prevalence HIV in the State and advised to further strengthen the efforts to achieve AIDS-free Andhra Pradesh.

Dr Rajendra Prasad said that he participated in the rally and meeting thinking that it was his social responsibility. He appreciated the presence of a large number of youngsters in the rally. He advised everybody to adopt healthy habits and protect themselves from diseases like HIV.

Krishna, president of Suraksha Society, Jayamma, president of GMM and Ramesh, president TNP, attended the meeting.
