Irrigation Minister meets farmers’ leaders, invites suggestions

Hyderabad: A day ahead of the all-party meeting to discuss the impact of Krishna Water Tribunal Award given by Brijesh Kumar, Minister for Major Irrigation P Sudarshan Reddy held a meeting with farmer and peasant leaders on Monday.

Addressing the meeting, Sudarshan Reddy said that the government would approach the apex court over the verdict and it would try to rectify the past lapses. He said the leaders of farmers’ organisations including AP Rythu Sangham, Telugu Rythu, Telangana Mattimanushulu, NSP Left and Right Canals Distribution Committees and Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham explained the problems the irrigation projects would face if the Tribunal award was implemented. AP Rythu Sangham leader P Padma said that the Tribunal has increased the State share by just 4 TMC which is meager and it has rejected all the objections raised by the State and suggested that the government should go to apex court.

PCC Kisan Cell convenor Kodand Reddy said that Tribunal calculating the allocation of water based on 65 per cent dependability, instead of 75 per cent, has allocated surplus waters of 177 TMC water to Karnataka and 81 TMC to Maharashtra leaving the lower riparian State in the lurch. Farmers’ leaders Laxma Reddy, K Pichaiah and V Panduranga Rao and principal secretaries of irrigation department Aravind Reddy and Adityanath Das attended the meeting.

The Minister, later, told the media that the government would implement the suggestions and recommendations made by leaders of peasant bodies.
