  • Two-third support in legislative bodies must for bifurcation
  • YSRCP leader Jagan meets him and enlists his support
  • Hence, the need to amend the Article 3, they said

Hyderabad: YSRCP leaders led by their president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Monday called on Janata Dal (S) president and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda in New Delhi, and enlisted his support for amendment to the Article 3 of the constitution.

Speaking to media persons, Gowda said that they had discussed the need to amend the Article 3. He said that Jagan informed him of his desire to move an adjournment motion to amend the Article, so that at least two-third majority in both Assembly and Parliament have to give their assent for bifurcating a state. He added that that the Left, a natural ally of his party, would also support their move.

When asked about Telangana, Gowda said that they had not discussed any particular region. The talks centered on the manner in which the Centre was dividing states for its political ends, which was not desirable. He wondered why the UPA government had not taken a decision on the T State for the last 10 years, and why it was trying to hurry through the process when elections were not far away.

Asked if his party would support the no-confidence motion against the UPA government, notices for which were given by YSR, TDP and Congress MPs, Gowda said that they were two different issues, and he would not like to comment on it. Claiming that an injustice was being meted out to AP, Jagan said that never before was a state carved out without an Assembly resolution. "This is happening in the country only for the sake of votes and seats, that too just five months before the elections. If this were to be accepted, then AP will set a new precedent,” he said. He further said that he had impressed upon Gowda on the need to speak against this injustice.
