Hyderabad: On Sunday, People’s Plaza was swarming with people, as far as the horizon. Wearing white T-shirts, people of all ages, emblazoned with the words ‘Run For Unity’, thronged the place.

The nationwide run was organised by the BJP to ignite the sense of unity among Indians and was received with warmth as the run saw participation in huge numbers. There were over 5,000 people who assembled at 7am at Necklace Road to burn a few calories, in the name of unity.

The guests of honour for the event were former cricketer VVS Laxman and senior BJP leaders Bandaru Dattatreya and Kishan Reddy. Also present were Manchu Lakshmi, Jeevitha Rajashekhar and Kondavalasa Lakshmana Rao. Before the run began, the crowds were oozing with patriotism with slogans like, ‘Jai Bolo Bharat Mata Ki’ and ‘Vande Matram’.

The only moment that could silence the crowds, was the live telecast of Narendra Modi’s speech from Vadodara on the large screens. During his speech, Modi mentioned that the run was being organised in 1,100 locations across the country simultaneously and he was expecting participation from over 2.5 crore people. Also before the run took off, a video was released, which encompassed the prospects of the ambitious project of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue. In the video it was said that the statue would be made of wrought iron, sought from agrarian implements and instruments from the farmers of the country.

The run was later flagged off by VVS Laxman, who said, “As a child I grew up learning about the various national leaders who aided in the country’s freedom struggle. The best we can do to honour them is remain united and show our strength in unity. By doing so, we will definitely put India higher than any other country.”

Scores of people participated in the 'Run for Unity' marathon held here and elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh today, organised on the occasion of 63rd death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said later that the event had a special significance in Hyderabad as it was Sardar Patel who united the then princely state of Hyderabad with the Indian Union.
