Farmers’ suicides Govt help still far away

The disbursement of long-pending ex gratia to 238 families of the farmers, who committed suicide in Medak district, has given a big boost to social organisations and intellectuals who have been fighting, in association with HMTV and The Hans India, for the welfare of farmers in the State. All of them came together on Friday to participate in a discussion as part of Janaghosha programme on HMTV. They resolved afresh to continue their fight till the last bereaved family gets compensation in all districts. They discussed ways to pursue the cases pending before the government on the ex gratia pleas of the poor families and decided to chalk out a future plan to intensify the struggle.

Representatives of social organisations, intellectuals, leaders of TRS and a number of relatives of the farmers who committed sucide said the government conceded their demand only after a protracted struggle in Medak district. The benefits are finally reaching the victims’ families who have been running from pillar to post for ex gratia for decades, they noted. The participants decided to strengthen their platforms in all districts to fight against the government apathy to the farmers’ problems, and fight for subsidised seeds and other inputs to the entire poor farming community.
