Disease caused by fungus Aspergillus Niger

Hyderabad: A team of doctors at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital (SDEH) on Monday finally discovered the reason behind the crystal formations in the eyes of 11 girls, hailing from Vellala Social Welfare Residential hostel of Cuddapah district.

Since June this year, mystery shrouded over the girls aged 8-16 inflicted with a strange disease. After many doctors failed to diagnose the ailment, finally the SDEH doctors solved the mystery. “The samples of the stones sent to lab were diagnosed with a fungus called ‘Aspergillus Niger’. This fungus when mixed with water in the eye forms Calcium Oxalate crystals. All girls were administered with anti-fungal eye drops. It is a rare fungus disease named Ocular Lithiases in the world and was discovered by our team of doctors,” said hospital superintendent Dr P Nandakumar Reddy.

“To find out the reason for this problem we appointed an expert committee comprising of doctors of different specialties of the Ophthalmology Department to conduct investigations on the students” he added. “The crystals falling from our eyes have stopped. Now we are completely cured and want to go back to our home,” said the girls.
