Hyderabad: A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P V Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday impleaded the political parties, which got land from the government at a throw-away rate, as respondents to a petition. Dispensing with the presence of Principal Secretary BR Meena, the Bench directed the government to file an affidavit within a week, explaining the basis for the allotment and also to inform on whose recommendation the lands were allotted to the parties.

It directed the government to issue notices to political parties as respondents asking them to file their counter affidavits within a week. The Bench was dealing with a petition by V Gopi Krishna, a resident of Nellore district. As reported earlier, the petitioner had challenged a GO issued in 2009 to alienate 0.97 cents to the District Congress Committee (DCC) to construct its party office in East Gudur village in Gudur mandal in the district. B R Meena appeared before the court, following its direction, and placed the details of alienation of lands to various political parties in the districts and also in the State headquarters. He informed that the government had alienated most of the lands at Rs 100 per square yard to various parties including TRS.

The government had also allotted lands to Congress, BJP, Telugu Desam, CPI (M), TRS, CPI, Visalaandhra Vignana Samithi and CPI-ML (New Democracy) at 16 places across the State. After perusing the details, the Bench wondered how the government could allot lands at Rs 100 per square yard in posh areas like Banjara Hills. Speaking through the Chief Justice, the Bench said, “Imagine, how much revenue the government could have fetched if those lands were put to auction.”
