Hyderabad: The Chairman of Telangana Praja Front, Akula Bhumaiah (65), died in a road accident here on Tuesday night. A speeding GHMC truck hit the two-wheeler which he was riding at Vidyanagar Cross Roads. He died on the spot. Bhumaiah took over as the TPF Chairman after Balladeer Gaddar stepped down.

The accident took place when he was returning from Basheerbagh Press Club after the release of a book titled ‘Prajaswamya Telangana.’ On receipt of the news, his friends rushed to the spot and suspected foul play behind the accident. They staged a demonstration with the body at Vidyanagar Cross Roads.

Telangana protagonists including G Devi Prasad, Manda Krishna Madiga, Varavara Rao, Govardhan, Raghunandan, Vimala, Sandhya and Vedakaumar joined the protest and demanded a probe into the accident. A classmate of Muppala Lakshman Rao alias Ganapathi, the top Maoist leader and chief of the CPI (Maoist), Bhumaiah had been sympathetic to the revolutionary struggles. He had been actively associated with the peoples’ movements for the past four decades and had been to jail many a time.

He started his career as a school teacher in Karimnagar district and spearheaded agitations over the issues related to the teaching community as a member of APTF and other organisations. He played a key role in the formation of the Democratic Teachers Front and Telangana Jana Sabha. Born in Khajapur village of Pedddapalli mandal in Karimnagar district, he devoted much of his time to the issues of disadvantaged sections.
