Hyderabad: As part of its efforts to achieve 100 percent electrification in all habitations and agency areas, the State government has decided to provide ‘free electricity connections’ to all BPL households under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY).

Chief Secretary PK Mohanty submitted a detailed project report to the Union Ministry of Power after holding a meeting with State-level Coordination Committee on RGGVY which was attended officials of AP Transco, Discoms and Energy department.

The RGGVY programme will be implemented under the rural electrification programme in 17 districts across the State during the 12th five year plan. According to the report, government requested the Centre to allocate Rs 666 crore for electrification of habitations and infrastructure development covering 14,670 villages.

It is proposed to electrify 10.25 lakh BPL households in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Warangal, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, Medak, Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa, Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam, Krishna and Guntur. Under the scheme, government would spend Rs 3,000 on free electricity connections for each household.

The committee, constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, would monitor the progress, quality control and resolve issues such as allocation of land for substations, right of way, forest clearance, railway clearance, safety clearance, etc for expediting the project.

According to official sources, State occupies first position in the country in the implementation of the RGGVY during 10th and 11th plan period. So far, 13,002 un-electrified habitations have been electrified covering 35, 65,160 rural households including 26, 65,142 BPL households.

Special Chief Secretary (Energy) M Sahoo, Special Chief Secretary (Planning and Finance) SP Tucker, Revenue Secretary VK Agarwal, AP Transco CMD Suresh Chanda, four Discom MDs and other officials took part in the meeting.
