Hyderabad: A day-long bandh called by the Samaikyandhra supporters, including TDP and YSRCP, against the Draft Telangana Bill hit essential services in the region on Friday, causing much inconvenience to citizens.

Activists of the TDP, YSRCP, NGOs and others held protests since morning in Vijayawada, Eluru, Tirupati and other places. Educational institutions, shops and commercial establishments remained shut at many places. The RTC services were badly affected.

The bandh, which was peaceful, evoked partial response in Kurnool, Visakhapatnam and Chittoor districts. In Anantapur, the Students’ JAC blocked the Anantapur-Chennal national highway and stalled traffic. Activists of the TDP and YSRCP organised rallies in various towns in support of the bandh.
Business activity was normal in Visakhapatnam. Courts did not function following a boycott by lawyers. RTC buses plied regularly. In Chittoor district, the bandh was partial, with RTC services remaining unaffected to Tirumala after the organizers exempted them.

The shutdown in East Godavari was total. In Kakinada, TDP activists obstructed Union Minister M M Pallam Raju from attending a programme, demanding his resignation. He attended it with police help. In Kadapa, YSRCP legislators could not take part in the protest, as they were attending the Assembly session. Agitators blocked the nationaL highways in Railway Kodur, Rajampet, Mydukur, Jammalamadugu and Pulivendula.

In Nellore and Vijayawada, the bandh was successful, with NGOs and TDP and YSRCP activists taking out rallies. In Srikakulam the bandh supporters burnt an effigy of the Centre. NGOs boycotted duty in Vizianagaram and formed a human chain at the Collectorate.
