Hyderabad: Thanking the Congress-led UPA government for taking a decision to form a separate Telangana State, CPI floor leader G Mallesh on Friday urged the Centre to accord national project status to Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project. Participating in the debate on AP Reorganisation Bill in the Assembly, he said that Telangana was given a raw deal in the allocation of funds. He alleged that injustice was meted out to Telangana in the area of education and employment. Natural resources of the region were also exploited, he added.

Mallesh criticised the YSR Congress Party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy for changing his stand on the Telangana issue. The YSRCP changed its stand on the State division for votes and seats, he added. Government chief whip G Venkataramana Reddy said the demand for a separate Telangana State was due to the failure of successive governments in implementing the Gentlemen’s Agreement reached during the merger of Telangana with Andhra Pradesh in 1956. “The Gentlemen’s Agreement, the six-point formula and GO 610 were also not implemented properly leading to discontent among the people of the region forcing them to fight for a separate Telangana state, he stated.
