Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India has announced election schedule for biennial elections to Rajya Sabha. This election will be a keen contest as it will be held at a time when the State is likely to get bifurcated and the MLAs are divided along regional lines. According to the schedule, the notification for the elections will be issued on January 21.
The last date for nominations will be January 28. Scrutiny of applications will take place on 29 and the last date for withdrawals is January 31. Polling for 55 seats in 16 States including Andhra Pradesh would be held on February 7. Results will be announced same evening.
In Andhra Pradesh, elections will be held for six seats. Of this, five are Congress MPs. Those who are retiring are Mohd Ali Khan, Nandi Yellaiah, K V P Ramachandra Rao, T Subbirami Reddy and T Ratna Bai. The sixth member N Harikrishna (TDP) recently resigned from Rajya Sabha opposing the decision of the Centre to bifurcate the State. Each member would require 39 votes to win the election. With not much time left for nominations, hectic lobbying is likely to begin now. TRS, YSRCP and MIM will play a crucial role in this election as the Congress strength in the Assembly has come down from 155 to about 146.
Congress can hope to comfortably win three seats on its own strength while TDP can win two. The balance two seats will depend on who would support whom. The TRS and YSRCP have 17 members each, and the MIM 7. The BJP has 4 seats, CPI 3, CPM 1, Lok Satta 1 and there are 3 independents.
The possibility of YSRCP fielding M V Mysura Reddy is not ruled out. YSRCP officially has 17. But another six are already sailing with YSRCP, taking their strength to 23. MIM in all probability will be supporting YSRCP which takes it strength to 30. If large-scale cross voting takes place from Congress party in view of the opposition from Seemandhra Congress leaders to the Centre’s decision to bifurcate the State, then YSRCP stands a chance to win one seat. It is learnt that Nandi Yellaiah, a BC leader, is trying for third term.
