Tirupati: The Tirumala Two Town Police registered a case against the devotees, who staged a protest in front of TTD Chairman Kanumuri Baparaju’s office, on January 11 and 12 in Tirumala.

According to sources, the police registered a case based on a complaint lodged by the TTD vigilance officer on Wednesday against unidentified persons on various charges, including abusing TTD personnel, unruly behaviour. It may be recalled that the devotees, who were angry over the enormous delay in having a darshan, stormed the TTD Chairman's office where they staged a dharna and also raised slogans against the Chairman and other TTD officials.

They alleged irregularities in the issue of passes. This apart, the devotees waiting for their turn to have a darshan in the queue complex lost patience when they could not get darshan even after waiting for almost a day. Hence, they raised slogans against the staff and broke the gate of one of the compartments, which was opened on January 12. The situation was brought under control by the police and the TTD vigilance staff.

It seems that the TTD management was embarrassed by the protests which hogged the limelight for wrong reasons and put the TTD in a bad light, for giving preference to the VIPs at the cost of common pilgrims. The complaint was lodged by the TTD vigilance department on Wednesday i.e., three days after the incident. The TTD apparently decided to finally act against the devotees, after a lot of debate, probably to send a message that it will not take kindly to such incidents and pilgrims should not resort to such acts. It is the first time the TTD has taken such a drastic step against the devotees who turned intolerant for the delay in having a darshan.
