Hyderabad: Eminent academic and rights activist Prof. Haragopal called upon student organisations to continue their fight against commercialisation of education.

Speaking at the 19th State-level conference of the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) on Tuesday at Osmania University, he stressed the need to concentrate on intensified struggle against moves such as Foreign Universities Bill, corporatisation of education from LKG to PG etc.

“Commercialisation of education is disgraceful and against the spirit of democracy in a big country like India. No country sells the natural human resources. Even in advanced countries like USA, there is no commercialisation of education but in India, it has been rampant. Privatisation led to decrease in human relations and increase of inhuman activities.” he explained.

Strongly opposing the Bill to allow foreign universities in India, Haragopal, who was professor emeritus at University of Hyderabad, underlined the need to oppose it tooth and nail.

“As the Union government is in a state of uncertainty, the Bill was not yet passed, else the country would have witnessed the entry of foreign varsities by now,” he said.

Stating that the struggle for free, better and qualitative education would go on even after the creation of Telangana state, Prof. Haragopal cautioned that students should not be under the impression that it would be a bed of roses in the new State of Telangana.

“Rulers are rulers. They will never be on the side of people in any State. So, organisations like PDSU should sharpen their arsenal for protracted democratic struggle for achieving the goals of free and qualitative education for all the students. The students of the underprivileged shall be our focus,” he suggested.

Devi Prasad, President of TNGOs, announced the support of Telangana employees to students in realising their demands. Potu Ranga Rao, CPIML New Democracy state leader, and B Pradeep, National Secretary of IFTU, Jhansi, leader of POW, Ashok Kumar, Goutham Kumar and Satya, leaders of PDSU were among those who addressed the gathering.
