  • General Election schedule likely in early March

New Delhi: The Centre is keen to notify creation of Telangana within a week of Presidential assent to the T Bill, after it is passed in Parliament. Centre wants notification by February-end, so that when the Election Commission announces Lok Sabha poll schedule in March first week, it would enable separate polls in Telangana and residuary State of Andhra Pradesh.

After the Bill is passed in in the upcoming Parliament session from February 5 to 21, it has to be given assent by the President. The duration required for completing the formalities of a new State is varied.

In fact, when Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were created in 2000 by the Vajpayee Government, it required 69 to 85 days for completing the basic formalities. In sharp contrast, the creation of Gujarat, following the bifurcation of Maharashtra in 1960 was formed within five days of the Presidential assent. The Centre is keen on a similar deadline for Telangana, so that the entire process could be expedited.
