Hyderabad: There were widespread public protests, backed by the Telugu Desam and YSRCP, in Rayalaseema on Tuesday expressing strong resentment to passage of the AP Reorganization Bill by the Lok Sabha.

The demonstrators, who staged dharnas and rasta roko protests, set fire to effigies of AICC president Sonia Gandhi, the Centre, TRS chief KCR and Union Home Minister S K Shinde.

The Samaikyandhra supporters called for bandh on Wednesday in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, in West Godavari, and of educational institutions across the region.

In Tirupati the municipal staff staged a dharna. They raised slogans against Sonia and KCR. Members of the Samaikyandhra Parirakshana Samiti, Students and RTC JAC too held a dharna at Bhavaninagar Circle. The Bill became a talking point at street corners and tea shops. Activists of YSRCP and TDP organised ‘rasta roko’ demonstrations in Puttur, Nagari, Srikalahasti, Kuppam, Madanapalli and Chittoor. In Puttur vehicular traffic was disrupted on the Tirupati-Chennai national highway. In Chittoor police lathi-charged Samaikyandhra activists pelting stones at Rajiv Gandhi statue. In Anantapur district JNTU announced postponement of examinations scheduled for February 19. People, including members of the Seemandhra JACTO, activists of TDP YSRCP took to the streets in Kadiri, Madakasira, Raidurgam, Puttaparti, Tadipatri and Guntakal. Cable TV transmission and power supply were cut off in Penugonda. RTC buses were off the roads. The protestors burnt effigy of BJP. NGOs staged dharna in Nellore protesting the death of their leader Damodar Joshi. Legislator Sridharkrishna Reddy and Congress leader Anam Jayakumar Reddy supported the agitators.

In Eluru several YSRCP activists attempted suicide by slashing their wrists and applied blood as ‘tilak’ to a Telugu Talli flex. In Rajahmundry Korukonda YSRCP mandal convener Chintapalli Chandrudu resorted to tonsure.

In Visakhapatnam TDP activists burnt copies of the Bill. In Pathapatnam, of Srikakulam district, owners of business establishments and private organisations downed their shutters.
