Indira Park tense after Anganawadi-police clash

As most of the Anganawadi agitators are woman, the police is having a tough time controlling them given that woman police are less in the city.

There were a few tense moments after the police and Anganwadi employees jostled against each other at Dharna Chowk (Indira Park) in Hyderabad. Thousands of Anganwadi workers from different parts of the state took to the streets in Hyderabad and staged a dharna. They demanded that the government increase their salaries to make it on par with the government employees. They also demanded promotion of eligible employees and implementation of pension schemes.

The police obstructed the workers when they tried to proceed towards the Raj Bhavan and Secretariat.

The anganawadi workers took out a rally to lay siege to the Raj Bhavan and Secretariat, but the police foiled their attempt. The police arrested several employees and took them into custody. Angered by the police attitude, hundreds of employees staged a sit-in at the Ashok Nagar traffic signal.

Despite police obstructions at several places, heavy crowd gathered at the Indira Park. Anganawadi workers flooded the roads between Indira Park and Ashok Nagar which brought traffic to a standstill. The roads were jam-packed with the traffic police struggling to take control of the situation.

Railway stations and bus stands were full with employees from across the state coming to participate in the dharna.

Meanwhile, several TDP and CPI leaders have been visiting the dharna camp to expressed their solidarity with Anganawadi workers.

Latest reports coming in suggest that a delegation of 6 Anganwadi representatives met the CS and submitted a memorandum.
