Hyderabad: After serving as the first citizen of Hyderabad for 26 months, Mohammed Majid Hussain, handed in his resignation to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner Somesh Kumar on Friday.

“As per the procedure laid down in the GHMC Act, I am giving my notice in writing to the corporation. A special meeting would be held in this regard for the acceptance of my resignation. I am quitting my post as per the directive of my party, AIMIM,” said Majid Hussain.

He said that his resignation was to honour the mutual agreement between AIMIM and the Congress Party.

He recalled all the accomplishments that the GHMC had achieved during his stint. He singled out the successful conduct of COP-11; rejection of the panchayat merger; enhancing the civic body’s budgetary allocation among others, as his tenure’s milestones.

He said that the civic body is planning to increase the number of circles from 18 to 30.

“On the welfare front we have implemented many schemes like Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu, Bangaru Thalli programme, Abhaya Hastam, Vikasam, Asara, which all were meant to improve the lot of the economically backward strata.

“Apart from upgrading basic amenities we have focused on delivering various services to the people through the citizen service centres,” Majid said.

A special general body meeting has been convened for March 22, during which his resignation would be put before the standing committee.

When asked about what he would miss as the mayor, he said, “I have never enjoyed the tag of the first citizen. In fact, I would prefer to be called as the first servant, which I always I was.”

About his future plans he said that he would continue as the Corporator for Ahmednagar.

“As a loyal worker of MIM, I would be available in whatever capacity my party needs me” he added.

Two projects that he held close to his heart were the Rs 5 Food Scheme and the RO water plants, he said.
