Hyderabad: Barring a few stray incidents, the second phase of the fourth ordinary elections to Mandal Parishat and Zilla Parishat territorial constituencies went off peacefully across the State on Friday. The polls took place for 536 ZPTCs and 7,971 MPTCs.
Addressing a media conference here on Friday, State Election Commissioner P Ramakanth Reddy expressed satisfaction in the smooth conduct of the elections. In comparison to the last elections, where repolling had to be held in almost 200 places, this time round it would be held in just eight places. By 3 pm on Friday, voting percentage stood at 69 per cent. Ramakanth Reddy informed that in certain places the voting percentage had touched almost 80 per cent at 4 pm. By 5 pm, people who were in the queue at polling stations were given slips and were allowed to cast their vote. The time was extended in several places to more than an hour. In response to a question on the safe keep of ballot boxes, Ramakanth Reddy said that the district collectors in consultation with revenue officials and police personnel would take decisions and shift the ballot boxes to appropriate buildings.
Repoll has been ordered in polling station No 35 of ZPTC Singanamala in Anantapur district due to use of 86 ballot papers pertaining to another ZPTC (Atmakur).
In polling station No 6 of Cherlapalli village in Yeldurthi MPP of Medak district, the poll process was vitiated due to use of ballot papers of another MPTC.
In polling station No 18 and No 21 of Kaluvoya MPP in Nellore district and in polling station No 43 of Dakkili MPP in SPSR Nellore district, similar problem was faced. In polling station No 27 of Busiputtu gram panchayat in Munchinputtu MPP of Vishakhapatnam district unknown persons forcibly took away ballot boxes. At polling stations No 41 and 42 of M Ravivalasa MPTC of Merakamudidam MPP in Vizianagaram district polling was stopped due to discrepancies in the voters list. The voters of polling station No 41 were shown under polling station No 42 and vice versa.
Repoll would be held on April 13 in all the places except in Visakhapatnam, where it would be held on April 16.
