Protest against proposed ordinance transferring 7 mandals in Khammam to Seemandhra

  • KCR alleges conspiracy by two Naidus
  • Asks Modi to desist from any such move

Hyderabad: Even before Telangana, the youngest state of the country is born, TRS appears to be heading for a confrontation with the Centre on the issue of transfer of seven mandals in Khammam district, which would get submerged under the Polavaram Project on the river Godavari to Seemandhra. The Chief Minister designate K Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday gave a call forTelangana bandh opposing the Centre’s move.

KCR alleged that Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Seemandhra Chief Minister designate N Chandrababu Naidu had conspired on this issue and had put pressure on the NDA government to issue the ordinance. He claimed that a decision on the ordinance was taken at the first cabinet meeting held in Delhi on Tuesday.

He felt that the Centre should not show undue haste in such sensitive issues and any geographical changes should be made only in consultation with the two states. “Issuing an ordinance in haste would be an unconstitutional and undemocratic and I urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to desist from any such move," the TRS president said. He also appealed to the President of India not to accept the ordinance. However, the Centre on Tuesday said that the issue did not figure in the cabinet meeting. KCR said that TRS was not opposed to the Polavaram project but wanted the government to change the design and reduce the height of the project so that submergence of the seven mandals consisting of over 300 villages could be avoided. If the Centre went ahead with the ordinance, the TRS government would challenge it in the Supreme Court, KCR said.

He called upon all sections of people to participate in the bandh and asked the business establishments to ensure complete shutdown in the region. He, however, asked people to hold peaceful protests and see that no law and order problem arises. KCR said that TRS would not allow even an inch of Telangana to be transferred to Andhra Pradesh state which would come into existence on June 2.

Telangana JAC and CPI-ML (new democracy) extended their full support to the bandh call given by the TRS. Several organisations namely TNGOs, TGO’s OUJAC, KUJAC, T Group-1 officers association, doctors JAC, lawyers JAC, teachers JAC T labour union, T-PRTU, T engineers association, T builders federation also expressed their support.
