Hyderabad: Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday promised to examine the possibility of selecting the city for the Centre’s flagship programme to build 100 smart cities. Addressing the officials at a review meeting of various developmental works, Venkaiah said that his government had set up a mission to build 100 smart cities across the country with GIS (Geographic Information Systems)-based town planning using the latest technology.

These cities would have integrated waste management and advanced transport system and Hyderabad fits the bill, he said. Chief Secretary PK Mohanty was also present at the meeting. Later, he told media that he had reviewed the progress of Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project, Metro Water Project and other key projects in which the Centre was a stakeholder.

“As far as HMR is concerned, in the first phase 71 km length has to be covered. So far 25 per cent work is completed. If the work progresses in the same manner, the first phase will be completed by July 2017,” Naidu said. Stating that people were migrating to cities from rural areas in large numbers in search of employment and other opportunities, he said about 31 per cent of total population of the country stays in urban areas. According to the 2011 census, 32 per cent of the country's population lives in urban areas as against 28 per cent in 2001 and 17 per cent in 1991, he said.

Naidu said according to estimates by 2050, about half of the country's population would be staying in urban areas. Hence, the Union government has decided to concentrate on developing 'satellite townships' around major cities across the country. “My ministry is planning to hold a national conference with municipal and urban development ministers from all the States so as to discuss the issue of rapid urbanisation and formulate a plan to meet the growing demands of cities. The conference is likely to be held at Delhi after the first session of Parliament, scheduled to begin on June 4,” the union minister added.
