Srikakulam/ Rajahmundry: Nine persons died due to effects of severe heat-wave conditions in the district on Saturday, taking the death toll during the last three days to 31. While nine died on Thursday, 16 succumbed the next day. Those who succumbed to hot weather on Saturday were Kallevu Suryanarayana (44) , Renukula Annapurna (40) of G Singadam mandal centre and a 40-year-old unidentified man of Sankali village in Regadi mandal. Three residents of Buragam village, in Tekkali mandal, and three persons in Palasa mandal also died during the day.

Meanwhile, the district collector constituted a three-member committee to study the weather conditions causing heat-wave deaths across Srikakulam. He assured to provide assistance under the ‘Apadbandhu’ scheme to the victims’ families. As many as 215 water supply centres have been set up across the district to provide relief to the people from hot weather. In East Godavari district, heat waves claimed 31 lives in the last two days, collector Neetu Prasad said in Rajahmundry on Saturday. ‘The district was under the grip of severe heat-wave in the last two days and high temperatures of 43-46 degree Celsius were recorded at various places.

So far, the heat wave has claimed 31 lives in the district,’ she reporters. Detail of the deaths was collected by the Revenue officials. Deaths were reported from Peddapuram, Ravulapalem, Kothapalli, Anaparthy, Rangampet, Mummadivaram, Dowleswaram, Mandepta, Allavaram, Alamuru, Prathi padu, Rajahmundry, P Gannavaram, Sakelatipalli, Pithapuram, Kothapeta, Srirangam peta. She said among the victims were a former Rajahmundry MP Kaneti Mohan Rao (97) who died in Matlapalem village. All schools have been directed to remain shut from June 13 to 16. Pamphlets carrying precautions from heat were distributed.
