8,584 tonnes of wood sought to be sold

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has obtained permission to auction 8.584 tonnes of seized red sanders through e-auction-cum-e-tenders process. Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited, a public sector undertaking, has been entrusted with the task. Red sanders is abundantly found in the forests of Kadapa, Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam and Kurnool in an area of 4.67 lakh hectares. Red sanders has been classified as endangered in 1997 in the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list. It has also been included in appendix-II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in 1995. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests P K Jha said the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora had given one-time relaxation to India to export 11,806 tonnes of seized and confiscated red sanders in any form.

Of this permission was given to sell 8,584 tonnes. In the first phase 4,199 tonnes would be sold. Auction was held for red sanders in the past in 2006. The e-tendering and e-auction would be held between September 19 and September 26 in Tirupathi.
