Hyderabad: State-owned electronic major, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which primarily manufactures advanced electronic products for the Indian Armed Forces, has come forward to set up its plant at an investment of Rs 1,500 crore at Penugonda in Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh.

A delegation of representatives of BEL, led by its human resources wing convener M L Shanmugam met the AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at Lake View Guest house here on Wednesday and sought 1,000 acres of land at Penugonda for setting up the unit. The BEL officials said the new plant would provide employment to 500 local people. They further told Naidu that it would also pave way for growth of ancillary industries linked to automobile sector would also come up later, thus transforming the place into an industrial hub.

Sources said the officials also urged Naidu to allot required land for the expansion of the company's existing unit located in Machilipatnam. Naidu, according to officials, told them that he would get back to them after talking to the Chief Commissioner of Land and Revenue.
