Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government seems to be banking on Corporate Social Responsibility funds from multinational companies to fund its much touted NTR Sujala Sravanthi Scheme, the drinking water programme under which people would get 20 liters for Rs 2. The scheme is being launched in 5,000 Panchayats in the State in the first phase beginning October 2.

Giving details of the scheme, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Ch Ayyanna Patrudu on Wednesday said the scheme would require an amount of Rs 120 crore a year and it would not impose burden on the State exchequer.

So far as many as 21 companies have come forward to operate the treatment plants and the government was examining their proposals, the Minister said. He said the Chief Minister had agreed to fix the power tariff at Rs 4 a unit and waive VAT for the plant to make them financially viable. Regarding abolition of Service Tax, the chief minister would talk to the Center, he said. The government insisted on these companies to maintain the plants for a period of five years since they were being given exemptions.
